You would think visiting the UK would be simple enough. Refusal rates for visitor visas are surprisingly high, and often the problem is not dishonesty or deception but that the application did not address what the decision-maker needed to see.
At Tower Bridge Legal, we prepare visitor visa applications that answer the right questions properly.
A standard visitor visa lets you stay for up to six months. Tourism, family visits, business meetings, conferences, private medical treatment, certain academic and creative activities are all covered.
Sub-categories exist for academic visitors, permitted paid engagements, and transit passengers, each with its own conditions. Knowing which category your visit falls into, and making sure your planned activities fit within its scope, is the starting point. Get the classification wrong and you risk refusal, which can complicate future applications.

Are you a Genuine Visitor?
The fundamental question is simple: are you a genuine visitor who will leave when your time is up? Decision-makers look at your immigration history, your ties to home, finances, and the plausibility of what you say you are coming here to do.
Someone with a steady job, property, family and other commitments in their home country is seen as lower risk than someone with weaker roots. That does not mean young single applicants without assets cannot get visas – they do all the time but they need to pay extra attention to explaining their circumstances credibly.
Financial Evidence
Financial evidence matters a lot. You need to show you can fund the trip and support yourself here without touching public funds or that someone else is willing and able to cover you.
Bank statements are standard but the Home Office wants more than a healthy balance on application day. They want to see income and spending patterns consistent with your circumstances. Large unexplained deposits shortly before applying will raise suspicion and may be disregarded entirely. We advise on presenting financial documents in a way that tells a truthful, coherent story.

Accommodation and Travel Plans
Set out your accommodation and travel plans clearly. Are you staying with someone? You can get an invitation letter plus evidence of their status and housing. Is your hotel booked? Include the confirmation. Flight itineraries help too and even provisional ones show you have a departure date in mind. We do not recommend buying non-refundable tickets before you have the visa, but having a draft itinerary demonstrates you have thought things through.
Frequent visitors sometimes go for long-term visas – two, five or 10 years. These do not let you live here continuously (each visit still caps at six months), but they save you applying and paying each time. They are granted at the decision-maker’s discretion, typically to people with a track record of compliant visits and an ongoing reason to come here regularly. This is useful for parents visiting settled children, business people with regular UK engagements, and others whose lives involve repeated trips.
Appeal rights after a visitor visa refusal are limited. Usually the answer is a fresh application that addresses the reasons given. We review refusals carefully and advise on whether a new application is worth pursuing, what extra evidence might help, and how to restructure the case. Where a refusal rests on factual error or misapplied rules, judicial review may be an option though such cases are uncommon.
