Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is the big one. It is the point at which the Home Office finally accepts that you are here to stay. No more renewal cycles or counting down the days until your visa expires. You can work without restriction, claim benefits if you need to, and start the clock ticking towards British citizenship. For most of our clients, reaching this point represents years of effort.
The standard route requires five years of continuous lawful residence, though what counts towards that depends on which visa category you have been in. Skilled Worker applicants face one set of requirements, while people here on family grounds face another. Long residence cases face ten years or more and operate under their own rules entirely. Timing your application correctly is critical. Apply too early and you get refused, losing a hefty fee in the process. We always double-check the eligibility maths before anything goes in.

The Continuous Residence Trap
Continuous residence catches people out more than almost anything else. The Home Office wants to see that you have actually been living here, not just holding a visa while spending most of your time abroad.
The rule of thumb is no more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period, and no single absence longer than six months. Exceptions exist for genuine emergencies such as serious illness of a close relative overseas, but they are interpreted strictly. Our advice? Keep a travel log from day one.
Then there is the Life in the UK test. Do not underestimate it. The test covers a sprawling range of material including, British history, culture, traditions, and its legal system. With each sitting costing money, we advise to start revising months before you plan to apply, rather than weeks.
English language is another box to tick for most applicants. Depending on your route, you will need to demonstrate B1 level proficiency through an approved test or by showing you hold a degree taught in English. Certain nationalities are exempt, while older applicants and those with particular health conditions may qualify for dispensation. We work out what applies to you and make sure the right evidence is ready.

Getting the Financials Right
Financial requirements vary with skilled workers typically needing to show they are still earning at or above the required salary threshold. Family route applicants must prove their household meets the minimum income figure. Either way, expect the Home Office to scrutinise bank statements and payslips carefully. How you present this material, which should be clearly organised and sufficiently cross-referenced will genuinely impact how smoothly things go.
We handle ILR applications across every main route including partners, parents, skilled workers, and long residence. We check eligibility, advise on timing, pull together the evidence, and manage the whole thing from beginning to end. This is a milestone that deserves to be done right.
